Among the 150 largest-cap stocks, 72 (48%) closed higher. 46% of all ASX stocks ended higher.

In terms of sectors, 6 sectors closed up, 6 sectors closed down, ranging from -3% to 1.9%. 7 sectors outperformed the market. The market was down -0.3%; Utilities was up 1.9%, the best performer, reflecting a more risk-averse market; Technology was down -3%, the worst performer.

● MERCURY NZ (MCY) spiked 4.3% (+$0.22), closed at $5.32, crossed above MA200 ($5.21). The best performer with a significant increase in volume.

● AGL ENERGY (AGL) largely rose 4.2% (+$0.32), closed at $7.88, a 61-day high, crossed above MA200 ($7.73).

● BLOCK (SQ2) plummeted -4.3% (-$4.39), closed at $97.76, fell 3 days in a row. The worst performer with a slight increase in volume.
